Structural steel detailing deals with production of accurate detailed drawings used for the fabrication and erection of steel components, together with estimates, plans and construction documents. Structural steel detailing covers a wide variety of steel components such as steel columns, beams, stairs, joists, roof trusses, braces, handrail, decking and so on.

Structural steel detailing is vital process for a gamut of industries such as residential building construction, industrial plants, ship making, and large malls among others. Precision steel detailing is critical for the success of large structures such as skyscrapers. Further, the steel detailer has to work closely with fabricators, structural engineers and contractors for its final release.

Structural steel detailing typically involves two types of drawings - fabrication shop and erection drawings. Steel shop drawings are used to find out fabrication requirements for each steel component and are primarily used by manufacturer to fabricate these members. These drawings provide detailed information on dimensions, sizes, specifications along with materials required for the process.

Erection drawings, on the other hand, are used to demonstrate the steel erectors, how to and where to position fabricated steel components. It contains comprehensive information on all essential processes like welding, bolting and even installing of wedge anchors.

Steel detailing, therefore, must be carried out with much precision and should comply with fabrication standards set by regional authorities such as AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction), CISC (Canadian Institute of Steel Construction), BS Codes, etc.

Thanks to today's technology-driven world, steel detailing can be performed much faster and effectively using CAD (computer aided design) software such as Tekla, Xsteel, Revit & AutoCAD. Structural steel detailing process also requires necessary skills in CAD drafting, analysis, reasoning, geometric dimensions, 3D visualization and collaboration to perform it successfully and within given schedule.

In US, most steel detailers are self taught or have general certification program with no industry experience. Because of these, it is very difficult to recruit and maintain a productive staff that can handle detailing work around the clock.
